Inyo Dojo Returns to Bristol’s Japanese Cultural Showcase
PUBLISHED 3 APR 2026
A celebration of tradition, performance, and living history is set to take over The Mount Without this April, as the Japanese Cultural Showcase returns on Sunday 12th with a full day of immersive experiences—and a powerful martial arts display at its heart.
Visitors can expect a rich exploration of authentic Japanese culture, with everything from traditional performances and art to food and Shiatsu therapy. The event is split across two sessions, offering both a morning (10:00am–1:00pm) and afternoon programme (2:15pm–5:15pm), each packed with activity.
Among the highlights are taiko drumming performances, elegant shodō (calligraphy), Japanese pop music, and a vibrant kimono fashion show—bringing together both historic and contemporary elements of Japanese culture under one roof.
Martial Traditions Take Centre Stage
For readers of Inside Ninjutsu, the standout moment will undoubtedly be the return of Bristol-based Inyo Dojo, representing the Bujinkan tradition.
Now appearing for the third consecutive year, the team has built a reputation for delivering dynamic and engaging demonstrations that leave audiences captivated. Previous showcases have featured everything from shuriken throwing and sword combat to intense hand-to-hand exchanges—each designed to bring historical martial systems vividly to life.
This year promises no less.
Spectators can expect a spectacular display of unarmed combat alongside demonstrations of classical weaponry associated with both ninja and samurai traditions. The emphasis is not just on action, but on authenticity—offering a glimpse into systems refined over centuries.
A Living Lineage
The Bujinkan is comprised of nine traditional schools, encompassing a wide range of techniques including strikes, kicks, throws, joint locks, and the use of weapons such as spears, staffs, and flexible tools.
Its roots are said to stretch back hundreds of years to medieval Japan, preserving methods once used on the battlefield and in covert operations alike.
Leading Inyo Dojo is instructor Raj Bhakerd, a martial artist with over 35 years of experience. His dedication to the art has taken him to Japan, where he has trained directly with masters of the tradition—ensuring that what is presented in Bristol remains closely connected to its origins.
Culture, Community, and Continuity
While the martial arts demonstration may be a headline attraction, the Japanese Cultural Showcase is ultimately about connection—bridging cultures, generations, and disciplines.
From the thunder of taiko drums to the precision of calligraphy, from fashion to food, the event offers a rare opportunity to experience the breadth of Japanese culture in a single day.
And at its core, the presence of Inyo Dojo serves as a reminder that these traditions are not relics of the past, but living practices—still studied, still evolving, and still capable of inspiring modern audiences.
