Bujinkan Takes Centre Stage at Bristol’s Premier Martial Arts Event

The South West Martial Arts Show made a triumphant return to Thornbury Leisure Centre, Bristol, cementing its reputation as the region’s premier martial arts gathering. Over the course of two action-packed days, the event brought together world-class instructors, eager students, and enthusiasts for a celebration of martial culture, training, and community.

With a schedule brimming with workshops, demonstrations, competitions, and trade stalls, this year’s show offered something for everyone—from seasoned martial artists to curious first-timers exploring new disciplines.

Bujinkan Shines Bright

Among the highlights was a dynamic Bujinkan workshop, which once again proved to be a major crowd-puller. Hosted by Inyo Dojo, the session offered participants a rare glimpse into the nine traditional combat schools preserved within the Bujinkan system.

The class showcased a wide spectrum of skills:

  • Unarmed fighting techniques, blending striking, grappling, and evasive tactics.

  • Sojutsu (spear work), illustrating the precision and timing of traditional weapon use.

  • Fast rope techniques, where an adversary can be bound in seconds with a simple cord.

Leading the session was senior instructor Raj Bhakerd, a familiar figure in the UK ninjutsu community. Raj’s teaching style—deeply rooted in the tradition passed down from Hatsumi Masaaki, yet made accessible to modern practitioners—once again drew praise from students and fellow instructors alike. His ability to convey complex concepts with clarity and energy made the workshop a highlight of the weekend.

While ninjutsu stood proudly at centre stage, it was far from the only art on display. The programme spanned the full spectrum of martial disciplines from Muay Thai to Kung Fu and Silat. This diversity ensured that attendees could broaden their horizons, cross-train, and appreciate the richness of the global martial arts community.

Looking Ahead

The buzz surrounding this year’s show has already set the stage for the next gathering. Organisers Kick Start have confirmed the date: Saturday, 26th September 2026, once again at Thornbury Leisure Centre.
